This systematic review contributes to the literature on unrealistic beauty standards in visual media cultures by clarifying that try-on surgery filters enable unrealistic beauty ideals, body image comparisons, perceived facial and body imperfections, digital body transformation, and digitized social interactions. My main objective is to indicate that emotion sensing technologies (Andronie et al., 2021a, b, c) optimize social media-based self-perception, mood and image manipulation, nonverbal messages, and impression management. The identified gaps advance filtered attractiveness and digital interactive behaviors.

In this review, prior findings have been cumulated indicating that beauty ideals, standards, norms, and imagery require networked social practices. My research problem is whether synthetic social networks articulate behavioral intentions, body image disturbance, social image and prestige, and poor appearance satisfaction in terms of visually appealing body images. The actuality and novelty of this study are articulated by addressing filtered and photoshopped faces and bodies, aesthetically appealing images, and face and body emotion recognition processes, that is an emerging topic involving much interest. By analyzing the most recent (2017-2022) and significant (Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest) sources, my paper has attempted to prove that beauty apps configure visual and digital practices in terms of idealized social media appearance-focused images, unfavorable appearance comparisons, and negative emotions and feelings. The purpose of my systematic review is to examine the recently published literature on face and body emotion recognition processes, negative mood and self-esteem, and appealing self-presentation and integrate the insights it configures on augmented reality beauty apps for physical appearance and attractiveness. Social privileges, norms, and practices, visual content and representations, appearance anxieties, and physical attractiveness ideals shape beauty standards and norms.
